International women’s Day 2024
International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8th to honour the achievements of women globally and advocate for gender equality. With its roots tracing back to the early 20th century, International Women’s Day has evolved into a significant platform for raising awareness and inspiring action towards gender inclusivity. Each year, a specific theme guides the celebrations, highlighting various aspects of women’s empowerment.
From its origins in labour and socialist movements to its widespread recognition today, International Women’s Day serves as a reminder of the progress made and the challenges that still lie ahead in achieving true gender equality. SNJ Charitable Trust acknowledges the importance of women’s empowerment in society to recognize social gaps and fill them with inspirational journeys. International Women’s Day
- Establishment and Evolution:
International Women’s Day, established in the early 1900s, has transformed into a vital platform for raising awareness about women’s rights and celebrating their contributions across diverse fields. It was the initial phase where women became vocal and aware of their rights and began campaigning for change in social discrimination.
- Roots in Labor and Socialist Movements:
Originating from the labour and socialist movements of the early 20th century, International Women’s Day (IWD) stemmed from the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York. Women protested against poor working conditions and low wages, laying the foundation for a global movement advocating for women’s rights. Around 15,000 women marched through the city demanding better pay, short hours, and the right to vote.
- First Official Observance:
In 1909, the first National Women’s Day (NWD) was observed on February 28 across the United States. Until 1913, women celebrated NWD on the last Sunday of February each year. The Socialist Party of America officially designated March 8th as International Women’s Day in honour of the strike. Later, in the late 1960s, the global feminist movement embraced this day, recognizing its significance in advocating for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
- Global Recognition:
Over the years, International Women’s Day has gained widespread recognition in various countries and cultures worldwide. It serves as a platform to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, highlighting their invaluable contributions to society.
- Historical Significance:
March 8th, 1917, stands out in history as women in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) protested against food shortages and the ongoing war, marking a pivotal moment in the Russian Revolution. This event further solidified the significance of International Women’s Day as a catalyst for social and political change.
